3D-Printed Custom Surf Boards to be Produced by Chicago Based Company
Surfing definitely has the cool factor, with millions of people taking to the waves across the world. Both the sport and lifestyle that goes with it is extremely popular, and this shows no signs of letting up. In some intriguing news for surfers everywhere, a Chicago based company called MADE boards is planning to design 3D-printed custom surf boards, based on actual data gained from riding waves. The company is trying to raise $450,000 through Kickstarter in order to further develop its sail, kite, surf, and paddle “SmartBoards.” MADE will custom build boards for their customers, after the customer has decided which board is best for their own body and activity, by using MADE’s VOLUME mobile app for iOS and Android. Considering the bad press that 3D-printing has had for various stories including home printed guns, this is definitely a more positive use for the technology. These custom boards have the potential to complement and improve the surf experience for people, and perhaps allow people to become better surfers.
