Grumpy Cat Gets Own Movie – Are You More Excited Than Her?
While memes on the internet generally have a very short shelf life (Ridiculously Photogenic Guy anyone?), Grumpy Cat seems to still be going strong. The Grumpy Cat meme photos are shared across the net everyday and Tardar Sauce herself was a big star at the recent SXSW in Texas. In fact Grumpy Cat’s fame seems to growing rather than diminishing as she is set to star in her very own movie. Who would have imagined that one little cat with a very grumpy face would go from meme to the movie star fame?
This is no small indie flick either with Hollywood executives set to develop the movie. Grumpy Cat is going to be given the power of speech as well probably in a similar style to Garfield.
Producer Todd Garner, who is developing the project, has said: “This started off as a picture of a cat, but rare is an image that evokes that much comedy.
“You read all of the memes and the comments, and one is funnier than the next. We think we can build a big family comedy around this character.”
Like many viral memes the Grumpy Cat success was more accidental than planned. Bryan Bundesen, the brother of Grumpy Cat’s owner, Tabatha Bundesen, posted a couple of pics of Tabatha’s pet cat Tardar Sauce on Reddit last year. The rest as they say is history, as people can’t seem to get enough of the Grumpy Cat images.
“It was an accident,” Mr Bundesen said. “We thought it would get some laughs, with the Internet liking cats. And it just kept going.”
There’s no doubting Grumpy Cat’s star power:
“The official website attracts more than 1.5 million visitors a month; the official Facebook page has more than 930,000 likes and a weekly reach of more than 2 million; the official YouTube Channel has over 120,000 subscribers and over 20 million views.”
“On top of that Grumpy Cat was voted Meme of the Year Award at the 2013 Webby Awards, named most influential cat of 2012 by MSNBC, has appeared on news shows and in magazines around the world and made a small fortune from merchandising deals.”
None of this impresses the 13-month-old mixed breed one bit, and that is why the internet loves her. Grumpy Cat has not been changed by fame unlike other young stars that I probably shouldn’t mention but you can probably guess who they are. This cat has not gone off the rails or changed her way, grumpy as ever in a world full of fake smiles she continues to make her millions of fans happy.
Of course her success is no guarantee that her movie will be as perhaps by the time it has been made people will finally have tired of her. Maybe not though; perhaps this cat could even be made into a franchise and maintain lasting success. Of course its her owners that get most of the benefit but at least she gets better cat food!
