The gaming industry moves fast. The Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 original style consoles are old to us gamers now. It’s all about the new style 250GB Xbox 360, and the super slim Playstation 3. However it would seem that the next generation of these consoles will be with us as late as 2014. But is this too early?
We all know that technology moves fast, but right now the graphics and power of games that we see on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 is amazing. The graphics are so good, and although some PC’s with a very good graphics card and other high tech internal components may look better on a bigger screen, they are both pretty much as good as each other. For example, a lot of games can be played on “Ultra” settings on the PC now even though there will be a lot of new graphics cards coming out towards the end of the year. Will games be able to offer even better models and other features within the game that warrant the use of next generation technology? Will this be available by early 2014 where these releases are currently expected?
Grand Theft Auto V didn’t wait for the new console. That of all games should be one that has incredible graphics and be able to handle seamless amounts of people in areas on the map acting as citizens of the environment to make it more realistic. Previous Grand Theft Auto games lack a lot of people on the streets even in the middle of the cities, which is not realistic. This is one argument for waiting until the new consoles come out so that the technology included would be able to handle this kind of thing. But look at Hitman Absolution. There are multiple levels where you are surrounded by literally hundreds of people. It doesn’t lagg, the current technology can handle it. Grand Theft Auto V feels confident they can run their game on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. No PC release date is confirmed as of yet, but if they chose to bring it out on that platform too, that is another system that will be able to take advantage of what such a game has to offer. Looking at the screenshots that have been released so far, it look like a game which will need good graphics power and a decent processor to go along with that.
For me, it feels too early for the next generation. It may be a similar gap between previous consoles, but technology has gone towards making internet speeds faster and more reliable. Games like Call of Duty should be less full of lag online, rather than the graphics made slightly better on a whole new console. Of course the world is also going mobile, and devices like the PS Vita, and now the newly announced Nvidia Games Console are set to be big hits. Does that mean more people want gaming in the move rather than in their homes. Is the Xbox 720 and Playstation 4 the right approach?
Please let me know your thoughts in the comments below, as right now I’m stuck in the middle unsure of what is right for the gaming industry. I can see the next generation working out, but at the same time I can see it being a struggle as our technology is changing in different ways to how it used to.
